Serial readers vs Poly-readers

At last I've found a person who reads like me - many books at the same time. I really enjoy a reading "menu" of many courses. I do like chocolate cake, for instance, but I would quickly tire of only chocolate cake for every meal. See what Julia Keller, Chicago Trib critic, says on NPR.

  1. Interesting! while I've never really thought of it, I'm a poly-reader, too. But I do tend to read detective/mystery fiction in one big gulp and let the other books (mostly but not all nonfiction) sit around until I'm inspired to pick them up again. Thus, I've got EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT INDIANS IS WRONG and THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON MUSIC (both nonfiction) and SKIPPY DIES (Irish fiction) sprawled around waiting to be picked up again. This doesn't count all the magazines (New York, Nation, Oprah) OR all the websites or reference books I need and use all the time (WORDS INTO PRINT, APA STYLE MANUAL 6TH EDITION, CHICAGO MANUAL OF STYLE). I just keep my fingers crossed that my eyeballs last as long as I do....I have THREE magnifying glasses to help. And I absolutely DO NOT UNDERSTAND or APPROVE OF those Kindle things. They're killing our bookstores!!

  2. I've never actually tried to read more than one book at a time. I guess I am naturally a one book gal.
